The Dr. Levi Watkins Jr. Institute/TSU/Meharry Accelerated Pathway Program was developed to reduce the amount of time it takes students to enter medical school. It is an accelerated pathway program with a 3 year premed program at TSU and then four years of medical school or dentistry at Meharry. This partnership between two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is an effort to increase the number of African American trained health care providers who might stay and work in minority communities. Requirements for the program include a 3.5 GOA, a score of 1300 on the SAT or a 29 on the ACT. There will be significant mentoring and tutoring as part of the program.

The first students will start in the Fall of 2021-2022.

Meharry has a preexisting Medical School Early Acceptance Program (MSEAP) with Middle Tennessee State University for Tennessee residents with a required two year Residency in Primary care in an underserved or rural area of Tennessee. This is also an accelerated 3 + 4 Program.

Meharry has a preexisting non-accelerated BS/MD program in conjunction with the ten HBCUs (Alabama A&M University, Albany State University, Alcorn State University, Fisk University, Grambling State University, Jackson State University, Hampton University, Southern University and A&M College, Tennessee State University, and Virginia Union University. Students are elected during the second semester of their first year in undergraduate school by the Site Coordinator at the institution.
